Micram Instruments Demonstrates World's Fastest PPG at ECOC 2014

CANNES, France --(Business Wire)--

Showcasing the latest addition to its growing family of ultrafast test & measurement systems, Micram Instruments is demonstrating its 68 Gb/s programmable pattern generator, the PPG6810, at this week's European Optical Fiber Conference, in a live demonstration also featuring the 72 GS/s AWG6020 dual channel arbitrary waveform generator.

New Horizons for UltraFast VEGA Converter Technology

"With our new PPG6810, we are extending Micram VEGA technology into another category of test equipment," said Micram Instruments CEO Matthias Tom Frei. "The unique power and flexibility of the VEGA architecture enabled us to build the world's fastest single and dual channel AWGs. Now we are bringing VEGA to the programmable pattern generator, redefining both the performance and the capabilities customers can expect from a PPG. We always strive to be the fastest, but in the PPG6810 we are also introducing features never before available in this class of equipment."

"In our demonstration at ECOC," Frei continued, "we're generating 68 Gbaud PAM4 signals, with channel precoding applied to optimize waveform output, a completely unique capability of the PPG6810."

Multilevel Signal Generation and Programmable De-emphasis in a PPG

The PPG6810 introduces new capabilities to programmable pattern generators, including the ability to generate both NRZ and multilevel signals, such as PAM4 and PAM8, without the need for external power combiners or other expensive accessories. The PPG6810 also delivers a 1.6 volt differential swing at maximum data rate, enabling split signal test configrations without costly external output amplifiers.

The PPG6810 is the only product of its kind offering internal, programmable de-emphasis, a key tool for silicon developers and test engineers engaged in worst-case error recovery testing.

"The PPG6810 is another step in our continuing program of leveraging Micram UltraFastSiGe™ technologies into a complete range of ultrafast test & measurement equipment," said Federico Lipparini, Director of Product Strategy for Micram Instruments. "One year ago we introduced the 72 GS/s AWG6020 arbitrary waveform generator and today it's still the fastest, most capable AWG available. Micram VEGA converter technology continues to lead the CMOS-based competition, which is limited in sample rates, frequency range and analog bandwidth. It's the wrong silicon platform for fast test equipment as we move into the era of 400G and beyond. Micram UltraFastSiGe™ is the right platform, which is why Micram Instruments is in front and pulling away from the pack in AWGs and now in PPGs as well."

Flexibility for the Future

"We're nowhere near the bottom of the Micram technologies goody bag," continued Lipparini. "We have outstanding multiplexer technology in our MUX2180 100 Gb/s 2:1 Mux, which current bit error rate tester (BERT) owners can use to double their effective performance. Our mux technology will be developed into future versions of our PPG, delivering unprecedented data rates which will keep us number one in performance for a very long time. Our proven approach of unlocking the true value of existing Micram UltraFastSiGe™ building blocks by integrating them into complete test & measurement systems is just beginning to pay big benefits to our customers and to our company."

Micram VEGA Speed and Bandwidth (News - Alert) on Display in MI's AWG6020

MI's live demonstration at ECOC 2014 also features the AWG6020 dual channel arbitrary waveform generator, which can generate high order complex modulation formats, such as 32QAM, 64QAM and OFDM, at world record performance levels of up to 72 GS/s with >23 GHz analog bandwidth. With two output channels, automatic internal channel synchronization and a fully integrated MATLAB programming interface, the AWG6020 is the premier ultrafast AWG for engineers and scientists seeking the most powerful tools for advanced research & development.

At ECOC in Cannes this week, you can visit MI and experience its live system demonstrations at Booth 277.
