2 Jimmy John's stores in Pittsburgh hacked [The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review]

(Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (PA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sept. 25--Sandwich chain Jimmy John's said Wednesday that hackers breached payment systems at 216 stores, included two in Pittsburgh, and stole customers' credit and debit card information.

The Champaign, Ill.-based chain, the latest company to disclose it was hacked, did not say how many customers were affected. The Pittsburgh stores where customer bank card information was compromised are on Carson Street in the South Side and on Forbes Avenue in Oakland.

Employees at both stores declined to comment. The South Side store was breached between June 16 and Aug. 13 and the Oakland store between June 23 and Aug. 21. The chain has eight stores in the region, among more than 2,000 locations in 37 states.

Cards affected appear to be those swiped at the stores only, and not used online, the company said.

Card data was compromised after a hacker stole log-in credentials from an unnamed vendor that processes transactions for Jimmy John's and used the information to remotely access systems at stores between June 16 and Sept. 5.

Jimmy John's discovered the problem on July 30 and hired third-party forensic experts to assist an investigation, which is continuing.

The sandwich company said it has taken steps to contain the breach, telling customers they can use credit and debt cards securely at its stores after it installed encrypted swipe machines and is reviewing vendor policies.

Card data stolen may include the card number, and in some cases the cardholder's name, verification code, and expiration date. Information entered online, such as a customer address, e-mail and password is secure, it said.

The chain asked customers to monitor card accounts for suspicious activity.

In the past year, debit and credit cards held by millions has been put at risk by incidents at Home Depot, Target Corp. and Michaels Stores.
