GameStop Plans To Hire 25,000 Employees For Holiday Season

(dpa-AFX International Compact Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Video-game retailer GameStop Corp. (GME), Thursday said it plans to hire 25,000 employees in the U.S. for the holiday season, an increase of 47 percent from last year.

In preparation for the rush during the holiday season, GameStop said it is currently recruiting for in-store Game Advisors, as well as about 250 consumer electronic technicians within its refurbishment operation center, and warehouse personnel for two distribution centers in Texas and Kentucky.

GameStop raised the number of hiring after considering the anticipated strong demand for new video games for Microsoft's Xbox One, the Nintendo Wii U and Sony's PlayStation 4 during the holiday season.

The release of the next-gen consoles last fall has been a blessing for GameStop as well as the gaming industry. For the second quarter, GameStop had reported a surge in profit as revenues jumped 25 percent credited largely to strong demand for next-gen consoles Xbox One and PlayStation 4. New software sales grew 15.6 percent during the quarter.

GameStop also expects huge rush from customers looking to trade-in their older iPhones for the new iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus. Additionally, Cricket Wireless's no-annual contract service will be available in 2,800 GameStop U.S. locations.

GME is currently trading at $42.50, down $0.66 or 1.55%, on the NYSE.
