BWC rebates approved [The Portsmouth Daily Times, Ohio]

(Portsmouth Daily Times, The (OH) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sept. 26--On Friday the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) Board of Directors approved a $1 billion rebate program. As a result Scioto County employers and agencies will receive an estimated $1,106,600 in rebates.

Among the public employers set to received a refund under the proposal is Scioto County, which is scheduled to receive $454,000, the city of Portsmouth is set to received $198,000 and the village of New Boston will get back $20,000.

Several Scioto County Schools are also on the list, with Portsmouth City Schools set to receive the most of all the schools listed -- $76,000.

In total there will be 3,800 local governments and 184,000 private sector employers that will receive rebates.

According to BWC, the amount each eligible public employer would receive equals approximately 60 percent of their billed workers' compensation premium from the 2012 policy year.

"Outstanding news yet again for Ohio employers," said BWC Administrator/CEO Steve Buehrer in a released statement. "Approval today means another $1 billion boost to Ohio's economy, and innovative new programs to support safer workplaces for our workers. We've been working hard over the last four years to be a better partner in improving Ohio's business environment, and will continue working to provide the best possible service to employers and injured workers." It is anticipated the checks will be mailed in October. Some of Ohio's local governments and schools are self-insured and do not pay into the BWC system and are therefore not impacted by the rebate plan.

The rebate program also includes investments in safety intervention grants to enhance the safety, health and wellness of Ohio's workforce, including funding for firefighter safety training.
