(ANSA Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) (ANSA) - Hong Kong, October 1 - Students called for the resignation of Hong Kong government leader Chun-ying Leung and warned Wednesday they would occupy public buildings if the chief executive refused to step down by Thursday. Lester Shum and Agnes Chow, spokespeople for the student organisations Hong Kong student federation and Scholarism respectively, spoke at a press conference in Admiralty, a neighbourhood of the semi-autonomous Chinese city where tens of thousands of pro-democracy demonstrators have been gathering. Dozens of students protested Wednesday at a Hong Kong flag-raising ceremony for a national Chinese holiday, demanding the resignation of the head of the local government, Leung Chun-ying, who took part in the celebration. The youths, led by 17-year-old Joshua Wong, gathered in front of Golden Bauhinia Square, where activities to honour the 65th anniversary of the foundation of the People's Republic of China took place. The demonstrators were among tens of thousands that have occupied the city centre to protest Leung and demand free elections for the next chief executive, which is currently scheduled for 2017.
