City of Dowagiac to offer electronics recycling next week [Dowagiac Daily News, Mich.]

(Dowagiac Daily News (MI) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 01--Local residents looking to unload years of outdated computers, televisions and other electronic devices and appliances will have the opportunity to do so next week in a responsible and potentially profitable way.

The City of Dowagiac is teaming up with Green Earth Electronics Recycling, based out of St. Joseph, to offer a special recycling event to people from around the area on Monday, Oct. 6. From 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. People will be able to drop off any unwanted electronic products at the city's parking lot at the northwest corner of Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.

While the department of public works regularly offers a spring cleanup and fall leaf removal projects, this is the first year that the city has offered this form of recycling for residents, said City Administrative Assistant Sue Watson. It sprung up from the city's collaboration with the Michigan Efficiency United program, though the city was initially anticipating workers with Green Earth to only accept refrigerators, air conditioners and other residential appliances rather than the wide gamut they will be recycling next week.

"It was a nice surprise, lets put it that way," Watson said. "It helps get these older electronics off the grid and out of the landfill." The items Green Earth will accept includes computers, laptops, monitors, TVs, telephones, cameras, DVD players, cords/cables, printers, toner cartridges, cell phones, refrigerators, air conditioners, appliances, and any other electronic items or items with a cord.

In addition, customers whose utilities are provided by an Efficiency United partner will be able to earn at $50 rebate for working refrigerators or freezers and a $15 one for working dehumidifiers and AC unites. To earn this rebate, visitors will have to provide their name, address and utility account number for their participating company, which includes the City of Dowagiac, Niles Utilities Department and Indiana Michigan Power.

"It's a nice fall to rid of those electronic devices," Watson said. "You can help cleanup the basement for the season, save some money of your electric bill and hopefully get some money in your pocket." ___ (c)2014 the Dowagiac Daily News, Mich.
