Arts council awards grants [The High Point Enterprise, N.C.]

(High Point Enterprise (NC) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 05--HIGH POINT -- High Point's primary nonprofit arts organization announced annual grant awards for several groups while it continues a capital campaign to retire the debt on its new headquarters.

The High Point Arts Council's board of directors approved a total of $82,000 for five of its affiliated organizations: Carousel Theatre ($5,000), High Point Ballet ($36,000), High Point Community Concerts ($8,000), High Point Community Theatre ($30,000) and Piedmont Artists ($3,000).

"We are very pleased that we were able to allocate at the same overall level as last year," said arts council board member Jim Morgan, chairman of the allocations committee. "We are very fortunate in High Point to have an Arts Council that cares about all of its citizens by doing different events which affects all of our lives. We are also very fortunate to have some very strong affiliates, which we take great pleasure in helping financially. The Arts Council is also proud to furnish a home for the Community Theater and Ballet." The arts council also allocated $12,000 for community arts projects and $10,000 in teachers arts grants for various projects in public, private and charter schools, which were increases over last year's levels.

These arts grants were made possible with funding from the city of High Point, Guilford County and the state, as well as donations to the arts council's United Arts Fund Drive.

Morgan said the arts council is making steady progress on its capital campaign for Centennial Station.

He said the arts council owes $499,851 on the $981,000 it borrowed to buy the building. The campaign has pledges of $67,001 that will be paid before the end of the year, "so we have a balance to be raised of $432,850," he said.

"We've either paid off or have pledges for 55 percent of the debt, and we have several other big donors with requests out. So I'm optimistic," Morgan said. "The building is very unique. It basically generates enough income through special events to pay the overhead, except for the interest." [email protected] -- 888-3531 ___ (c)2014 The High Point Enterprise (High Point, N.C.)
