Next Step Living and Stop & Shop Help Homeowners Save $1 Million in Energy Costs Annually

BOSTON --(Business Wire)--

Since the beginning of the partnership in early 2013, Next Step Living®, New England's leading provider of home energy solutions, and The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. LLC, which operates 395 grocery stores in the Northeast, have helped more than 25,000 Stop & Shop customers learn about home energy efficiency and sustainability. In addition, by taking action on what they learn about, these customers have shaved $1 million annually from their collective utility bills while protecting the environment.

Next Step Living works with Stop & Shop store managers to schedule in-store appearances of home-energy representatives at information tables. It's a convenient and easy way for Stop & Shop customers to learn how to make their homes more energy-efficient and save money while living more sustainably and comfortably. Next Step Living representatives encourage shoppers to begin with a comprehensive home energy evaluation that, depending on a customer's utility provider, costs little or no money. Many follow up with additional home energy improvements like weatherization.

"Next Step Living was founded on practivism, the belief that green living is compatible with good business," said Geoff Chapin, CEO and founder of Next Step Living. "The success of our partnership with Stop & Shop demonstrates that's possible. As we continue our partnership, we look forward to expanding into new geographies and adding more promotions to help hmeowners make an even bigger collective impact in cutting their energy use and utility bills."

This partnership has made a quantifiable educational, environmental and economic impact that is especially noteworthy to highlight during Energy Action Month:

  • Almost 5,000 Stop & Shop customers have had home energy evaluations, and more than 1,100 also have air sealed and insulated their homes for additional energy efficiency.
  • The steps those homeowners took collectively have prevented the emission of almost 4,000 metric tons of CO2, the equivalent of about 800 cars being removed from New England roadways.
  • The economic impact: $1 million annually in energy savings.

Stop & Shop, recognized by the EPA as an Energy Star® Leader for improved energy performance in its buildings, supports the in-store program as part of its Better Neighbor Promise. Its goals are to protect the environment, support the community and better the lives of its customers. Stop & Shop has a long history of environmental leadership including building LEED-certified stores that reduce the company's carbon footprint, employing innovative green building technologies, and conserving energy. Through the partnership with Next Step Living, Stop & Shop is helping its customers find practical ways to reduce their own energy consumption, thereby saving money and energy.

"Stop & Shop is committed to sustainable practices in our day-to-day store operations and we are proud to partner with Next Step Living to help our customers learn more about reducing energy consumption," said Joe Kelley, president, Stop & Shop New England Division. "We are particularly excited by the response from our customers to the home energy evaluations and our partnership's promise for even greater energy savings in the years ahead."

The partnership continues with the goal of saving shoppers more than $5 million in energy costs over a five year period. In addition to the in-store appearances of home-energy representatives at information tables, Stop & Shop customers can also schedule home energy evaluations on these sign-up pages, one for Massachusetts homeowners and one for Connecticut homeowners.
