Black Duck Software CMO Phil Granof Recognized by The CMO Club for Leadership in Marketing

BURLINGTON, Mass. --(Business Wire)--

Black Duck Software, the leading OSS Logistics solutions provider enabling the deployment and management of open source software (OSS), today announced that its Executive Vice President and CMO Phil Granof has been recognized as a winner in the leadership category of the CMO Awards. The CMO Club selects four winners each year for their display of leadership in building, leading, and motivating a high performing organization. Granof will be honored at the CMO Awards dinner in New York on Tuesday, November 18 at The Dream Downtown Hotel.

Granof leads worldwide marketing efforts at Black Duck Software (News - Alert). He is responsible for marketing automation, demand creation, corporate brand, global marketing strategy, and corporate communications. He has successfully repositioned the entire brand, built a modern marketing organization, and simultaneously redefined the OSS Logistics industry.

"Black Duck didn't hire me to fit the mold of the traditional CMO. In fact, the company had previously never employed someone in that position. Black Duck took a leap with me as CMO, and I with it. From my own perspective I saw huge untapped potential at Black Duck, and it has become one of the best decisions I've ever made," said Phil Granof, CMO, Black Duck Software. "The key to differentiating a company and ensuring sustained success is to develop a solid brand, then spread and stengthen it through everything you do. Marketing is moving in a direction that is primarily about metrics. If not careful, however, the pendulum can swing too far. Everything needs to be measured, there's no question. But the numbers are indicators, not the goal. Metrics need to facilitate, and not overshadow the real goal: to build a sustainable, meaningful presence in the minds of all stakeholders, or in other words the brand. Patents and software all eventually expire, people change and leave companies. What remains is always the brand. It's the most durable asset a company has."

There is real passion behind Granof's daily work cementing a strong brand presence that he's helped to build at Black Duck. He recognizes that his path to CMO is anything but normal. Prior to Black Duck, Granof founded a branding agency from the ground up and ran it for fourteen years. With more than 20 years of experience in marketing strategy and brand development, Granof combines an analytical data-driven approach to marketing with a creative vision that has reshaped iconic brands around the globe. He earned his M.B.A. from Dartmouth College's Tuck School of Business, where he has lectured on issues of Branding and Marketing, and a B.A. from UC Berkeley where he graduated summa cum laude.

"The CMO Club is thrilled with the quality of all CMOs nominated, then selected as category winners for this year's CMO Awards voted on by their peers. We are not only excited about the awards event to honor their accomplishments and legacies, but also look forward to the CMO interviews and CMO Awards Roundtable that will enable us to share their expertise and insights with other CMOs in the club and the industry through our new CMO Solutions Clubhouse," noted CMO Club Founder and CEO, Pete Krainik.
