Fostering Greater Science and Technology Collaboration Between Canada and India


(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) OTTAWA, Ontario, Oct. 15 -- Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, an arm of the Canadian government, issued the following news release: The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, today met with Jitendra Singh, India's Minister of Science and Technology, and launched a call for proposals for joint research and development projects under the Canada-India Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement.



The call for proposals stems from a new memorandum of understanding between Canada's Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and India's Department of Science and Technology (DST). It is aimed at promoting scientific collaboration between Indian and Canadian scientists in the areas of safe and sustainable infrastructure and integrated water management.

From 2007 to 2014, joint funding from Canada and India supported 13 high-quality bilateral research and development projects in priority areas such as sustainable technology, information and communications technology, and biotechnology.


Minister Fast is currently leading a six-day, three-city trade mission to Mumbai, Delhi and Chandigarh--his third to India since 2011.

Quick Facts - India is a priority country under Canada's Global Markets Action Plan. It is also a priority under Canada's International Education Strategy.

- Canada and India's bilateral science and technology (S&T) relationship was formalized in 2005 with the Canada-India S&T Cooperation Agreement. It came into force in November 2008.

- India is currently the second-largest source of foreign students in Canada (31,500 in 2013), and the number of new admissions continues to increase. Between 2008 and 2012, the number of study permits issued to Indian students increased more than four-fold.
