U.S. Chamber Statement on ICANN 51 Meeting

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 -- The U.S. Chamber of Commerce issued the following news release: U.S. Chamber Executive Vice President and Head of International Affairs Myron Brilliant issued the following statement on the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) 51 meeting in Los Angeles: "Because companies of all sectors and sizes have come to depend on the Internet to reach customers and do business worldwide, the impending transition of U.S. government oversight of critically important Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions bears careful scrutiny. Our member companies are especially concerned that issues such as accountability and transparency are addressed as ICANN moves from its contractual arrangement with the Department of Commerce.

"While the Chamber remains supportive of the IANA transition process, that support has always come with the expectation that ICANN will develop a plan that guards against any efforts by foreign governments or government-run organizations to upend the successful multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance. It is imperative that ICANN take further steps to enhance transparency accountability before any transition plan be finalized.

"The U.S. government's contractual relationship with ICANN has been a source of confidence to all stakeholders who have an interest in ICANN's execution of the IANA functions, but also for its broader activities in the Internet naming and addressing space. Before any transition can be complete, ICANN must take the necessary steps to improve transparency and accountability to establish a similar level of confidence among stakeholders.

"We will continue to work in support of the IANA transition process, while linking a successful transition to increased ICANN transparency and accountability. Our hope is that the ICANN 51 meeting moves both issues closer towards a positive solution."
