Children To Be Taught Cyber Security Skills

(Sky News (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Children as young as 11 will be shown how to stay safe online and be taught skills which could inspire them to take careers defending Britain in cyberspace.

The new national lesson plans are backed by the National Crime Agency and will teach schoolchildren cyber security to address a critical talent shortage.

The lessons will feature techniques such as cryptography and look at cyber-policing.

Industry experts ranging from BT to the National Cyber-Crime Unit have been involved in putting the programme together to inspire children to take careers in online security.

Janet Bygrave, an IT teacher at Sedgehill School in South East London, told Sky News: "It's really important for our students not just to know how to use their various devices and to be secure in what they're using.

"It’s basically looking at how to be safe on the internet, looking at the risks and what settings you can put in place to minimise those risks.

"We're talking about sharing images, personal details, all of those things that students can take quite lightly.

"We're making them aware that once something is sent over the internet, it is out there, and it stays out there." The school's Year 11 prefect Conor Tuffin said: "People can get into all sorts of security problems online. You can talk to people from all over the world and knowing how to protect yourself is important." (c) Sky News 2014
