Chunghwa Telecom vies for 2G network upgrade

(Taiwan News Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) To quickly expand its fourthgeneration (4G) user base, Chunghwa Telecom has been aggressively expanding its 4G mobile network. Recently the company has submitted an application to the National Communication Commission (NCC) for an approval to transfer the 900MHz frequency bands occupied by its 2G users into a 4G network with hopes to well prepare itself for a 4G telecom war.

Asia Pacific Telecom also announced Wednesday that it has newly obtained an extra 700MHz band 4G license from NCC and is expected to offer service by year's end. Earlier this month, the company obtained 1 million units of 4G wireless broadband numbers.

The nation still had about 2.87 million 2G service users by the end of August, a decline of nearly 1.2 million users from the beginning of this year.

Since 4G mobile service has kicked off for five months in Taiwan, the country has owned nearly 1.7 million 4G users, according to NCC's data.
