Boss's tips ; KNOW HOW [Mirror (UK)]

(Mirror (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) John Drury is general manager of The SSE Arena, Wembley - one of the world's most famous music venues.

He is responsible for leading the venue's teams - from operations and technical through to sales and marketing - and ensuring the arena remains an iconic venue for many years to come.

Hiring the right staff to keep everything running smoothly is vital. We asked John to share his tips as a boss to help jobseekers land that role: FOCUS Turn your mobile phone off so you're not distracted by incoming calls/ texts/tweets/Angry Birds/updates. Look alert and engaged. You have to look like you want to be there. If you don't, why should they want you? RESEARCH Know the company and as much as possible about who you're meeting. Check their website and find their latest news, especially if relevant to the job you're going for. It's always good to be able to raise a subject that's uppermost in their minds.

ACCURACY Make sure your spelling/grammar is spot on. When I have lots of applications for positions bad spelling or grammar will mean you're on the reject pile! BE ON TIME Plan your interview journey. Check traffic updates and if necessary do a trial run just to make sure you can get there 10 minutes before your appointment time.

PRACTISE SELLING YOURSELF Be prepared to explain how your skills and experience match the job description. Make a case as to why it should be you who gets this job. But at the same time don't over-claim - you'll get found out! SHOW YOU WANT THE JOB Always have a question you want to ask at the end of the interview. Sometimes these come out in the interview and if so try to hold one back. Ask them anything about the company - it's your turn to grill them gently!
