(News-Sentinel (Fort Wayne, IN) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 24--Imogene Nusbaum-Snyder, board president of the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission, received the Foellinger Foundation's Carl D. Rolfsen Stewardship Award for outstanding nonprofit board leadership during a luncheon Thursday at Memorial Coliseum.

Nusbaum-Snyder was among 27 award nominees recognized at the luncheon for their board leadership for local nonprofit organizations, a foundation news release said. The award includes a $15,000 grant to The Rescue Mission for operating support, plus a $10,000 grant for board governance training.

"Imogene reflects strong leadership motivated by faith, character and nonprofit governance leadership," the Rescue Mission said in nominating her. "Her work will have a lasting impact because of her unwavering commitment to healthy board governance, servant leadership and providing hope to the homeless in our community." The Rescue Mission provides faith-based restorative care to homeless men, women and children, including providing emergency shelter, meals, and programming for clients' spiritual, emotional and educational needs, the news release said. Last year, the Rescue Mission served 1,275 men, women and children.

Foellinger Foundation organizes the Rolfsen Award luncheon to highlight exemplary work by volunteer leaders at nonprofits, who help improve the quality of life in Allen County, foundation President Cheryl Taylor said in the news release.

"We want to uplift these volunteers to their peers and the community and to encourage others to promote quality nonprofit leadership," Taylor said in the news release.

The award honors Rolfsen's 25 years of service on the Foellinger Foundation board of directors. Rolfsen, who retired from the board in 2005, still serves on the foundation's Investment & Finance Committee.

Local nonprofits could nominate a board member who exemplifies at least three of the "Ten Basic Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards" identified by BoardSource, a national organization working to strengthen nonprofit organizations' board leadership.

Recommended board responsibilities include determining mission and purpose; selecting, supporting and evaluating the chief executive; monitoring and strengthening programs; and providing financial oversight.
