Yellow Pages Launches Shop The Neighbourhood(TM), a Local Shopping Campaign in Support of Small Businesses

(Marketwire (Canada) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - Oct. 24, 2014) - Editors Note: There are two videos associated with this press release.

With a century-long legacy of contributing to the success of small and medium businesses across Canada, Yellow Pages (YP), a Canadian digital media and marketing solutions company, launched today Shop The Neighbourhood, a corporate social responsibility campaign to encourage local shopping in support of local businesses.

This free initiative consists of large-scale multimedia awareness campaigns in the Calgary, Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa areas to encourage Canadians to make local purchases during Shop The Neighbourhood on Saturday, November 29th and take advantage of promotions offered by businesses exclusive to the event.

According to a recent Statistics Canada study, cross-border shopping by Canadians in the U.S. rose 72 per cent between 2006 and 2012, with Canadians spending $8 billion in the U.S. in 2012 alone.

Strategically placed between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, two popular shopping events which are known for driving dollars across the border or to online chain retailers, Shop The Neighbourhood serves as a reminder to Canadians that their dollars have a significant impact in their communities when spent locally.

"Calgary's local businesses are a vital part of what makes this city unique. As Canadians gear up for the holiday shopping season, Shop The Neighbourhood is about making sure that we all remember that purchases made at local retailers directly benefit our neighbourhoods and in turn, enrich our communities," said Julien Billot, President and CEO of Yellow Pages.

"We encourage Canadians everywhere to save at least one planned holiday purchase and make it locally on November 29th and wherever possible, to support local businesses year-round," continued Billot.

Shop The Neighbourhood also provides local businesses with the opportunity to update their online presence and experiment with mobile marketing at no cost.

A 2014 research note from the Canadian Internet Registration Authority states that while three quarters of Canadians research purchases online, less than half of small businesses in Canada have an up to date online presence.

In its operations, Yellow Pages seeks to close this digital gap between Canadian consumers and small businesses. Participating businesses join Shop The Neighbourhood by entering their basic business information which automatically updates the Yellow Pages database and syndicates to all major search engines. In addition, businesses who choose to offer a promotion will have their offer displayed in a dedicated Shop The Neighbourhood category on the Yellow Pages mobile app and online at YP.ca and shoptheneighbourhood.ca in November.

"Calgary is Canada's small business capital, and this campaign is a great opportunity for our community to celebrate and support those small business well beyond the third week in October," said Adam Legge, President of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. "This campaign celebrates the tens of thousands of businesses and business owners operating in this city and highlights their role in sustaining a healthy economy and vibrant communities. The Calgary Chamber is proud to support this campaign and all efforts to support small business success in Calgary, and we encourage small businesses to participate." Annie McInnis, Chair of C-Biz, the umbrella organization for the Calgary Business Revitalization Zones (BRZs), and Executive Director of the Kensington BRZ, added: "We weathered the flood so successfully because of the tremendous commitment of Calgarians to local business. We're looking forward to seeing that same commitment on November 29 as Calgarians make a concerted effort to make local purchases in their neighbourhoods."
