See scenes of Durant [Durant Daily Democrat, Okla.]

(Durant Daily Democrat (OK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 24--How do you celebrate Durant? A group of young people posed the question recently on social media sites, then asked others to post photos from around the city on Instagram. They received 34 submissions and selected eight to display at a new exhibit inside the Three Valley Museum on Main Street.

The exhibit was unveiled Thursday evening at a reception, SE Night at the Museum.

The photo campaign actually was conducted by Rising Sun, a student-run advertising and public relations firm. The agency is its second year as part of the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Department of Art, Communication and Theatre. Sponsored by Shannon McCraw, students Austin Weaver, Emily Quam, Marliss Allen and Alex Franklin have taken on the Three Valley Museum as a client.

"We wanted to get young people involved in the museum," said Weaver, a senior public relations/advertising major. "We figured the best way to do that is to use social media." He said his team members shared the photo requests on their personal and the Southeastern Department of ACT social media pages.

"The whole idea was to get some traffic from people who normally wouldn't walk through the door," Weaver said. "We would love to see more submissions. We intend to become more active on the museum's page and share the photos." As people filtered in at the museum Thursday, one photo that garnered perhaps the most comments featured the old blue and white Colvert's Dairy Products sign that still stands along North First Avenue and remains in good shape.

That sparked some discussion about the history of landmarks in the Magnolia Capital of Oklahoma. The Rising Sun team members were surprised to learn the museum building itself was a machine shop in the 1800s, when the "machine" hadn't advanced as far as what comes to mind more than a century later.

Thursday's reception also included a presentation by Michael Davis about the history of Southeastern.

Rising Sun has planned another event to promote the museum. The Planes, Trains and Brains Trivia Night is slated for 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at the Massey Building. The Rising Sun team said it will be a good time.

Go check out all the exhibits at the museum, 401 W. Main St., where there's also more information about the trivia night.
