SSC, HSC mark sheets to go online [Nagpur] [Times of India]

(Times of India Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) NAGPUR : The state education ministry will be putting SSC and HSC mark sheets online to prevent forgery. By January the software will be up and running and enable education institutes to verify whether the mark sheets submitted by admission seekers are genuine or not.

State education commissioner S Chockalingam said, "The online verification process will be simple and ensure that genuine candidates get admission. A few details, already mentioned on the mark sheet hard copy, will have to be entered by the institute and it can have access to the original mark sheet online." The state already has databank of mark sheets going back almost 15 years and plans to put everything in the public domain. "As the mark sheets were being printed from computer database, so there is over decade and a half of databank ready with us. The only issue is that it is not in the format which can be viewed online. The software to put everything in a proper format is already collating the data and everything will be complete by December 31," said Chockalingam. He added this initiative was on the lines of the Centre's push to put academic records online.

TOI had reported in September 2011 that the Union human resources and development (HRD) ministry had initiated the digital mark sheet project. It was christened National Academic Depository (NAD) project and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had kick started a pilot project with it, providing NAD with data of certain exams it organized in 2011.Sources in the HRD ministry had told TOI at that time that the ultimate goal was to have all academic records in the country digitalized, so that no one could forge a mark sheet to get a job/admission. Verification of mark sheet by employers, universities, boards or individuals is, as of now, the sole purpose of this project.

Apart from preventing forgery, the other issue is about time saving. Currently for verifying mark sheet the host university/board can accept attested photocopies, or/and has to send the mark sheet to the originating university/board for verification. Getting a mark sheet verified takes up to a month's time. But with this new initiative, everything can be completed in minutes. Since the education ministry will directly be in control of the software and online domain, the entire process will be authentic. This facility is expected to be free of cost both to the student and to the person/institute verifying the record. More details are expected by December as the state's project nears finality.
