'Bid' to boost business with transport and marketing [South Wales Echo (UK)]

(South Wales Echo (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) HUNDREDS of traders in Penarth are to be balloted on a bid to boost business in the town.

The ballot will ask traders if they support plans to create a Business Improvement District (BID) in Penarth.

A Business Improvement District is a businessled partnership that improves trading conditions in a high street or town centre - in a similar way that a shopping centre manager does in modern malls.

A draft BID proposal is nearing completion which would see most businesses within the area paying a 2% levy over their normal National Non Domestic Rates.

A ballot is likely next year, with up to three months then needed to establish the BID and start collection of the levy.

The BID area focuses around the town centre and links to the seafront and Penarth Haven.

The BID steering group's priorities for expenditure are improved parking and signs, encouraging the use of public transport, additional marketing and promotion, and exploring business to business trading opportunities.
