Al-Qaeda spreads ideology in EU via Internet - Czech intelligence

(Czech News Agency Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) AlQaeda spreads ideology in EU via Internet Czech intelligence Prague, Oct 31 (CTK) AlQaeda tends to focus on spreading its ideology among young Muslims in Europe and the Czech Republic via the Internet, for which it mainly used its website and social networks, the Czech Military Intelligence Service (VZ) says in its annual report for 2013.

An uncontrolled spreading of radical ideas raises the danger of terrorist attacks by so called "lone wolves" who operate separately on their own, the VZ writes.

It says the Czech Republic is not a primary target for terrorists.

According to the VZ report, AlQaeda focuses on spreading its projihad ideology among the Muslim community in Europe, including the Czech Republic, now that its military capacities have been weakened.

"A dominating role is mainly played by the jihad website and the social media such as Facebook and Twitter, where radical ideas have been spreading uncontrollably, along with stands that influence young European Muslims' thinking," the report says.

"This increases the threat of the lone wolves who plan and carry out terrorist attacks independently from AlQaeda, and who are therefore more difficult for intelligence services to uncover," the VZ writes.

It writes that though the Czech Republic has been a part of NATO's antiterrorist operations, and though it presents itself as a traditional ally of the USA and Israel, still it is not a primary target for Islamist terrorist organisations.

However, Czech soldiers in foreign missions are exposed to a high risk, as well as military diplomats at embassies in the Middle East and north African countries and in the countries in Asia where mainly AlQaeda branches operate, the VZ points out.

It warns against the Islamic State fighters who come from Europe, who have undergone military training and acquired radical views in Syria.

"After returning to European countries, they may pose a security risk," the VZ writes.
