DiData takes backup to cloud [ITWeb]

(ITWeb Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Backup-as-a-service enables businesses to reduce costs across data centres, while continuing to meet long-term retention requirements, says Dimension Data.

Dimension Data, in partnership with CommVault, has introduced its backup-as-a-service (BAAS) product to the South African market. CommVault provides the software for the service.

According to Grant Morgan, head of strategy and marketing: ITAAS at Dimension Data MEA, enterprises' concerns about business continuity and the need for integrated and automated backup and recovery-as-a-service has grown.

With every new cloud service a business consumes, the total amount of content that needs to be stored and accessed grows substantially, he explains.

BAAS provides users with a system for backup, storage and recovery of computer files. It also enables customers to reduce costs across data centres, while continuing to meet long-term retention requirements, says Dimension Data.

Morgan points out BAAS has become imperative in the current landscape, where cloud has really changed the way businesses look at technology.

He adds the service will help organisations become digitally oriented, be more agile and have a competitive edge. "Backup-as-a-service helps eliminate expenses for onsite backup infrastructure and transforms the entire backup and recovery process into a secure, managed commodity, complete with predictable recovery outcomes and known operating costs." Morgan points out, while cloud adoption is increasing rapidly, cloud workloads are often left out of enterprise backup and recovery plans. Cloud servers are resilient and available for active data, but an accidental deletion of data may compromise a company's business continuity and compliance requirements, he adds.

For enterprises today, backup options are complex and costly, often putting the burden back on the IT department. He says Dimension Data Cloud Backup is a backup and recovery service available as an add-on to enterprise-class public, private and hosted private compute-as-a-service offerings.

According to an IDC BAAS white paper (https://www.emc.com/collateral/analyst-reports/idc-backup-as-a-service-advantages-sp-end-users.pdf), firms are leveraging a range of new BAAS offerings as a means of outsourcing non-strategic tasks as well as improving disaster recovery and service levels for certain workloads.

"The adoption of cloud has surprised the marketplace," says Morgan. "Most organisations have to make a choice to build their own cloud platform or enable service providers to provide access to the cloud." (c) 2014 ITWeb Limited. All rights reserved.
