The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Licenses Three Start-up Companies


URBANA, Ill. --(Business Wire)--

The University of Illinois Office of Technology Management is proud to announce that technologies created on the Urbana-Champaign campus have resulted in the foundation of three start-up companies in the first four months of fiscal year 2015. Licensed University technologies were instrumental in the formation of each company.

The start-ups include:

  • Voxel8 is a Boston company that aims to provide new functional materials and 3-D printing platforms for the mass customization of electronics and other novel devices. The start-up is based on research from Jennifer Lewis, formerly of the University's College of Engineering and now at Harvard. Additionally, Voxel8 was a 2014 Gold Winner in Mass Challenge, the world's largest start-up accelerator and competition held each year in Boston.
  • Veriflow Systems is a company located in the Research Park's EnterpriseWorks incubator commercializin a new approach to network security. Matthew Caesar and Brighten Godfrey, faculty in the College of Engineering's Department of Computer Science, and Ahmed Khurshid, PhD candidate in Computer Science, founded the startup. Veriflow Systems participated in University programs such as Entrepreneur-in-Residence, I-Start, and I-Corps.
  • Rithmio is a gesture recognition company located in the Research Park's EnterpriseWorks incubator and Chicago. It is developing a gesture recognition platform, which is currently geared toward wearable devices, smartphones and even connected sporting equipment. Adam Tilton and Prashant Mahta, of the College of Engineering, cofounded the start-up. Rithmio won the University-funded track of the 2014 Cozad New Venture Competition. rithmio.com



In the past five fiscal years, 34 start-ups have come out of the University. The University also has a portfolio of more than 700 active issued U.S. patents.
