Cathy Baron Tamraz, Chairwoman and CEO of Business Wire, has been named an inaugural recipient of New York Business Journal's "Women of Influence" Awards. Tamraz, oversees Business Wire's long-term strategic planning, internet strategy and global branding. Cathy was the main architect in selling Business Wire to Berkshire Hathaway in 2006. Her November 2005 letter to Warren Buffett detailing the synergies between the two firms resulted in the company being acquired. Under her stewardship, the company has grown to be the leading global commercial news wire, significantly expanding Business Wire into new markets, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada, Japan and Hong Kong, among others. Career milestones at Business Wire include:

  • Joined Business Wire in San Francisco in 1979 and opened the New York office in 1980
  • Named head of the company's New York region in 1987
  • Named a vice president and appointed to the company's Executive Committee in 1990
  • Named executive vice president in 1998
  • Named chief operating officer in 2000
  • Named president in 2003 and CEO/Chairwoman in 2005

In addition to her professional achievements, Cathy also supports philanthropic initiatives focused on education, mentorship and health services through organizations such as New York City's "Behind the Book," Girl's Inc., St. Jude Children's Hospital, Doctors Without Borders and Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind. Additionally, Business Wire has a long-standing term charitable matching program whereby employee contributions to any 501(c) (3) organization are matched by the company at 50 percent.

"This selection came as a surprise and is, indeed, quite an honor," said Tamraz. "I congratulate all of the honorees and thank the New York Business Journal for including me in this illustrious group of women business leaders."

The New York Business Journal's "Women of Influence" is part of a national effort by American City Business Journals to identify and celebrate women business leaders and to foster business environments that will create even more successful women in the future.

The New York Business Journal has selected 78 honorees for its inaugural "Women of Influence" Awards who will be honored at a luncheon on January 22. Nominations for this first-time program were sought publicly in the fall and submitted by a variety of sources, including association partners, entrepreneurs, business owners and executives. The winners were picked by a group of American City Business Journal editors, led by Mary Johnson, editor of Bizwomen.com.
