Federated Wireless Names Wireless Industry Veteran Kurt Schaubach as Chief Technology Officer

Federated Wireless, which develops technologies to maximize the utilization of spectrum resources, announced today that Kurt Schaubach, former Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative (NRTC (News - Alert)), is joining the company as Chief Technology Officer.

Schaubach brings more than 20 years of experience in spectrum development, management and policy. He will play a key role in developing technologies and new business strategies for Federated Wireless as the company works to create the next-generation architecture of broadband wireless.

"The addition of Kurt to Federated Wireless' world-class technology team reinforces our belief that the company is poised to be a leader in the growth of mobile broadband and the development of 5G cellular communications," said Iyad Tarazi, Chief Executive Officer of Federated Wireless. "His breadth and depth of experience will strengthen our team and the overall company."

At NRTC, Schaubach was responsible for the company's technology strategy and product development in wholesale mobile wireless, rural broadband wireless access, satellite broadband, microwave backhaul, land mobile radio, and SCADA. He developed an innovative partnership with a national mobile network operator (MNO) that enabled rural exchange carriers to build and operate 4G networks; managed a portfolio of VHF spectrum assets; and developed distribution automation and demand response utility grid technologies that leveraged spectrum assets.

Prior to NRTC, Schaubach led the acquisition of spectrum, and managed the spectrum portfolio, at NextWave Wireless (News - Alert). He worked closely with counsel at the U.S. Federal Communications Commission on regulatory compliance matters and led an industry-wide coalition to bring new technical rules and regulatory reform to the 2.3 GHz WCS band.

"The wireless industry is in a period of explosive growth, and the ability to unlock spectrum bands and increase spectrum sharing is critical," said Schaubach. "Federated Wireless is developing a truly disruptive technology. I'm excited to join the company at a pivotal stage in its development - and at an exciting period of transformation for the industry as a whole."

Schaubach was also a founding member of a publicly trded wireless broadband and multimedia software company, and led the acquisition and integration of two wireless infrastructure companies. Schaubach was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce to serve on the Commerce Spectrum (News - Alert) Management Advisory Committee (CSMAC), which advises the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) on a broad range of spectrum policy issues. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Enterprise Wireless Association.

Federated Wireless is building a proprietary Spectrum Access System (SAS (News - Alert)) that leverages advanced cognitive radio techniques to provide secure, dynamic and efficient sharing of spectrum resources. The company's innovations aim to address a growing deficiency in spectrum, made scarce by an explosion in the use of wireless communications and in particular, video content delivery. Federal users as well as commercial carriers are seeking ways to efficiently utilize and manage scarce spectrum resources, as there is little available for growth of mobile broadband and the development of 5G (fifth generation) cellular communications.
