Team Detroit Stirs Up Creativity During SXSW with Crowd Funding Pitch Competition at First Ever "Austin SOUP"

DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 27, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- WPP's Team Detroit, a leading global advertising and design agency, invites Austinites and SXSW goers alike to see what's brewing at the inaugural Austin SOUP, an innovative crowd funding pitch competition, at 4 p.m., Sat., Mar. 14 at Trinity Hall, located at 311 East 5th Street, Austin.  Hosted in partnership with the nationally recognized Detroit SOUP, Austin SOUP gives participants a chance to win more than $1000 in funding for a project or idea that seeks to improve an aspect of the local Austin community.

SOUP missions are all the same – to promote community-based development through crowd funding, creativity, collaboration, democracy, trust and fun.  Since Detroit SOUP's inception five years ago, the monthly event has compelled thousands of people to donate more than $85,000 to nearly 100 groups that are revitalizing Detroit with passionate and innovative projects.

Detroit Soup Executive Director Amy Kaherl says this is the kind of change Austin SOUP hopes to compel for Austin as well. "I believe it can happen because SOUP gives people an easy, affordable and personal way to do good," she said.

Team Detroit - U.S.A. President David Murphy says bringing Detroit SOUP to Austin perfectly rounds out two days of compelling programming already planned by the agency for this year's SXSW.  "From panels and keynotes featuring our senior leadership, to immersive technology experiences in the Team Detroit Technology Lounge, to our 60 Seconds to SXSW student recruiting promotion - we're showcasing the best of our marketing and technology expertise," he says.  "At the end of those two days, Austin SOUP interrupts technology and demonstrates how, even without it, we use our expertise to compel social change through community investment and human interaction."

Nominations to pitch at Austin SOUP close March 9 at 11:59 EST; interested persons or groups can submit proposals at www.detroitsoup.com/austin.  The event is open to the public.  Attendees will pay a $5 suggested donation to connect over a meal of soup and salad, while listening to four presentations (four minutes or less) from people seeking funds for projects or programs that benefit the community.  Then, the audience votes for their favorite and the winner takes all the donations home. The total award amount will be at least $1000.
