The conference featured more than 70 technology and business leaders who shared challenges and successes on a broad range of IoT topics, including connectivity, security and predictive analytics. From medical equipment company Sysmex to Tyco Fire Protection Products, from smart agriculture company OnFarm to consumer business Yankee Candle Scent Systems, attendees had the opportunity to listen and learn how these organizations are building and deploying IoT strategies.

Massachusetts as the Hub of IoT

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker (News - Alert) and Harvard Business School professor Michael Porter joined PTC president and CEO Jim Heppelmann on stage to provide the big picture for the IoT, which included positioning Boston as the hub of the IoT universe. Porter and Heppelmann summarized key concepts from their recent Harvard Business Review cover story on the impact of smart, connected products on competition. In his solo opening keynote, Heppelmann shared PTC's vision for what can happen when physical and digital worlds merge, highlighting the importance of big data analytics and the potential to completely rethink a company's service strategy.

"PTC is no longer the Internet of Things best-kept-secret. LiveWorx, an annual event started by ThingWorx, the IoT platform developer PT acquired eighteen months ago, is now the largest, fastest-growing IoT event, according to the company." - Forbes

PTC Vision

Heppelmann moderated a panel of C-level executives from other leading IoT solution providers who are among the technology industry's most respected players in the market. Chris Penrose, AT&T Vincent Roche, Analog Devices; Gareth Noyes, Wind River (Intel (News - Alert)) and Ayan Mukerji, Wipro shared insights and provided ideas for attendees who are creating, building and managing IoT initiatives across their organizations.

"…the keynote session was one of the best I've attended in years. It was a perfect balance of announcing news, showing company capabilities and demonstrating PTCs thought leadership in this IoT market. I was extremely impressed." - IDC (News - Alert)

Massive Growth

Charlie Ungashick, executive vice president and chief marketing officer said about LiveWorx '15, "As you expect with any hot, new market, there are many IoT conferences that people can choose to attend. With LiveWorx, we wanted to get beyond broad topics and go deep by featuring dozens of real-world success stories. Given the astronomic growth, we clearly delivered content that provided great value."

IoT Hackathon

Two days before the event, more than 100 participants put their technical expertise to the test as they worked for 24 hours to crack IoT challenges, wire up prototypes and devices, and develop groundbreaking IoT solutions for smart city, accessibility, and smart agriculture challenges on the ThingWorx® IoT platform.

Team SmartSign won the $10,000 prize in the Accessibility for the Blind category as supported by the Perkins School for the Blind for its sensor-enabled upgrade for signposts to make crosswalks and intersections safer for the visually impaired and all pedestrians. Judged by Steve Wozniak, he declared the winning hack one he associates with, "I really relate to helping individuals in real-life who need to get around in everyday activities."

PTC made several announcements at the event, including its agreement to acquire ColdLight and the new ThingWorx Converge™ IoT product offering. When combined, these technologies will offer a single platform for connectivity, device management, rapid application development, and big data and predictive analytics.

LiveWorx '16 is being held June 5-8 in Boston. Those interested in speaking at LiveWorx '16 should send an email to [email protected].
