Southwestern University Celebrates 175 Years of Higher Learning in Texas


GEORGETOWN, Texas, Oct. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Southwestern University will celebrate its 175th anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Roy H. Cullen Academic Mall and Red & Charline McCombs Campus Center. The event is open to the public and will feature live music by Walker Lukens, a 2009 Southwestern University graduate, in addition to games, food trucks and giveaways. The event takes place during the University's Homecoming & Reunion Weekend.

"We are excited to welcome our alumni, current students, and the community to our campus to celebrate our deep Texas roots," Southwestern University President Edward Burger said. "For 175 years, Southwestern University has been engaging minds and transforming the lives of many of the best and brightest students from Texas and beyond."

As the first university in Texas—established on Feb. 5, 1840, by charter of Mirabeau B. Lamar, president of the Republic of Texas—Suthwestern hosted, by multiple historical accounts, the first recorded college homecoming on April 21, 1909, in Georgetown, Texas.



Additional anniversary events include a homecoming parade in downtown Georgetown, a 5K fun run/walk and tours of the historic campus. Attendees will also have the opportunity to take photos for a book that will be buried in the 175th anniversary time capsule.

Guests who pre-­register for Homecoming & Reunion Weekend events by Oct. 8 will receive one free ticket for giveaways at the 175th anniversary party. Pre-registration is $5 for adults and free for children under 18, students, faculty and staff. After Oct. 8, the registration fee is $10.
