The 4th Green Technologies Seminar Discusses the Green Shipping Financial Tools amidst other Green Technologies and best Practices

SINGAPORE, Nov. 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The 4th Green Technologies Seminar co-hosted by leading classification society, ClassNK, and Seatrade was successfully held on Monday, 16 November 2015 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Close to 100 executives from the maritime industry registered for the seminar which touched on the latest green technologies development and best practices.

Noboru Ueda, Chairman and President, ClassNK

ClassNK Chairman and President, Noboru Ueda kicked off the seminar by addressing the need for a greener and more eco-efficient operation through investment in new technologies. Ueda said "By harnessing the skill and experience of the entire industry through joint R&D, we can develop solutions that help owners comply with new regulations while also benefitting from savings through increased efficient operation." Ueda added that since 2009, the classification society has supported some 330 joint projects and is in talks with partners to carry out further 50 projects.

Mark Clintworth, Head of Shipping, European Investment Bank (EIB) and presenter of the keynote address on Financial Initiatives for Green Shipping shared that the shipping industry is facing a number of challenges to finance investments required to meet the new sulphur emission standards applicable in controlled areas. The Green Shipping Financing Tools (GSFT) currently developed by EIB will focus on de-risking the environmentally focused investments and will be designed for general fleet renewal focused on greener shipping and being incremental to commercial lending. Mark also highlighted that the GSFT will not provide financing to operators that do not have a sustainable business perspective.

Reduction of fuel consumption was also highlighted at the seminar. Dr Toshio Yamatogi, General Manager, Composite Business Department, Nakashima Propeller Co., Ltd shared that the company has been doing research and testing on carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) propellers on smaller vessels and a joint research project they have worked with ClassNK in 2014 on the retrofitting of the main propeller of a 500GT chemical tanker in Japan, resulted in the first application of such technology in the world.
