Atheer Brings Augmented Reality Smart Glasses into the Highly Complex Energy and Utility Workplace

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Atheer, the company pioneering the new AiR™ (Augmented interactive Reality™) computing platform, today announced that its popular AiR Glasses and AiR Suite application are now available to guide equipment operation, maintenance and inventory management for the demanding utility workplace. Atheer has been working with Duke Energy and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to research and enhance its products for the energy and utility sector.

"We're thrilled to be collaborating with a leading company and the prominent research institute in the utilities industry to demonstrate the benefits of hands-free smart glasses in this highly complex workplace," said Alberto Torres, CEO of Atheer. "Our AiR Glasses and AiR Suite are a natural fit for improving safety and ensuring error-free operation for field personnel looking to view step-by-step instructions and collaborate with remote experts."

The collaboration demonstrates the growing role of augmented reality (AR) and smart glasses in enterprise business applications, specifically for enhancing productivity and safety for hands-on professionals. Deploying advanced AR solutions in the utility workforce using the novel Atheer platform will help workers ultimately achieve greater efficiency and drive down error rates for mission-critical tasks.

"As we conduct research in delivering safe, reliable and efficient electricity to the public, it is crucial to ensure higher productivity and reduced risk for utility engineers," said John Simmins, Technical Executive in the Power Delivery and Utilization Sector at EPRI. "There's tremendous potential in the numerous applications of augmented reality and smart glasses in developing safe and effective workflows while maintaining a reliable, safe, efficient and environmentally responsibleelectric system"

Managing complex industrial equipment and performing timely maintenance demands thorough training and on-the job guidance. Until now, such tasks required multiple experts to go on site and workers to carry instruction manuals with them. Atheer's AiR Glasses enable wearers to see critical work information in their field-of-view and interact with the data using familiar gestures, voice commands and motion tracking. With the collaboration-centric AiR Suite application, users access checklists, work instructions and equipment manuals, as well as consult with remote experts by live streaming their point-of-view, all-the-while keeping focus on their task at hand.

The Atheer AiR platform also optimizes and streamlines inventory management in warehousing logistics. The physical counting process is one of the most common activities within the warehouse management, where maintaining accurate stock information and its verification has traditionally been a tedious and error-prone task. AiR Glasses running the AiR Suite application can communicate with the inventory management system and display the relevant stock information and its item location in a logistics worker's line of sight. The worker can verify stock, scan bar codes and input information right from the warehouse, eliminating manual steps and reducing errors.

Duke Energy, EPRI, and Atheer will demonstrate utility use cases with Atheer's AiR Glasses and AiR Suite in the EPRI booth #2061 at DistribuTECH in Orlando, Florida.
