IIIT Hyderabad Alumni Aim to Bring 300 Million Indian Newspaper Readers on Mobile

HYDERABAD, India, August 24, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --

We truly are living in a digital age. Everything from our home to our car is becoming digital. Collecting Pokemon tazoz physically out of a bag of chips has been replaced by catching them in augmented reality in a park through a mobile app. But as surprising as it may sound, there is still a product which has more or less remained the same for the last 300 years, a product which is usually the first thing that you allot your attention to each day, your Newspaper.

Newsdash, a startup by IIIT Hyderabad alumni, is trying to change that by bringing the newspaper reading experience to mobile with their unique newspaper-like layout and the completely offline experience. The company aims to serve the 300 million newspaper readers in the country by bringing their favorite newspaper directly to their mobile in an easy and effortless way. The current experience of reading newspapers in a digital form is described as 'painful and unsatisfactory' by the founders and this is what they wish to change with Newsdash. The fact that newspapers are still predominantly print-only means that it is almost impossible to read the majority of newspapers in places other than the ones they are published in.

"Although there are many news reading apps out there, none of them quite provide the simplicity of the newspaper in consuming the entire day's news at once with just a few glances across pages. This is the gap in the current news offerings that Newsdash is addressing. We have carefully studied what has made the nespaper such an efficient source of bulk news consumption allowing us to follow 150-200 news articles in about 5 minutes and put that knowledge into designing a layout which provides the same experience on a mobile screen. We want to allow our users to read all their favorite newspapers on their mobile, offline and for free," says founder Prahal Ghai.

Android users can download the app for free on the Google play store and simply select which newspapers and newsletters they wish to read. These are then automatically delivered to the users device every day and can be read anywhere as per the users convenience since they are completely offline.

Newsdash which released their android app on the Google play store earlier this year is making all the right noises. The team is one of the select few in the country to operate out of T Hub, the country's largest incubator and won the TiE Hyderabad smashup competition this year and received funding from the angel investors present and judging the event. Speaking on their journey since winning the TIE Smashup, founder Antesh Bharadwaj says, "The last few months have been amazing. After winning the smashup we now have a great set of mentors as a part of our team advising us and helping us grow. Recently we pitched to the Hon'able IT secretary of Telangana Mr. Jayesh Ranjan and were selected by him and an esteemed panel for the Mobile 10x startup accelerator backed by the Internet and Mobile Association of India and focused on helping high potential mobile apps in the country. We have over 1000 newspapers and newsletters being delivered daily and around 5000 news articles being read on the platform every day."

Newsdash is focusing on adding more publishers on the platform and wants to reach all national and regional publications to cater to the overwhelming response and requests from their users. Having launched on Android, the team is also looking at launching an iOS version soon.

"Our current focus is getting more publishers across categories on board. We wish to be the default daily content consumption platform on mobile for Indians," say the founders.
