Samsung Semiconductor Inc. Hosts Sixth Annual "Gears for Giving" to Help Cure Childhood Cancer

More than 300 employees from Samsung (News - Alert) Semiconductor's Silicon Valley headquarters will be participating in the sixth-annual "Gears for Giving" charity event this Friday, Oct. 21 to raise funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. This year, Samsung will be joined by employees from Cisco (News - Alert) to further raise awareness in the fight against childhood cancer.

Gears for Giving is a bike, walk, run and cheer event that consists of a 10-mile bike ride, a 3-mile run and 1.5-mile walk - all starting at the new Samsung Device Solutions America headquarters at 3655 North First St., San Jose, California. Participants not cycling, running, or walking will be cheered on by employees at the start and finish of the event.

"Our vision is for Samsung Device Solutions America to partner with more technology companies in the Valley to make Gears for Giving the largest event on the West Coast for St. Jude in our quest to help cure childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases," said Scott Birnbaum, vice president and executive sponsor of Gears for Giving event at Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. "This year marks the biggest event yet with the addition o Cisco employees, who will help raise donations as we run, walk, ride and cheer together in San Jose."

Since hosting the inaugural event in 2011, Samsung employees have contributed nearly a quarter million dollars to St. Jude including a dollar-for-dollar match by Samsung of donations made by employees. Others are encouraged to donate by visiting the St. Jude site. Donors can simply click on the foundation link for the Samsung Gears for Giving event and specify a donation amount.

Gears for Giving will kick off at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21 with a speech by a mother whose son is currently undergoing treatment using St. Jude's protocols and is seeing firsthand how its approach is making a difference. Based on treatments invented at St. Jude, childhood cancer survival rates have gone from 20 percent to more than 80 percent since the hospital opened more than 50 years ago.
