BioNovelus Makes Key Strides in the Fight Against Coffee Rust in Guatemala

Phoenix, March 01, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- / BioNovelus, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: ONOV) is proud to announce that it has acquired all certifications and licensures it believes necessary to sell and distribute products from newly established Guatemalan Subsidiary: BioNovelus-Guatemala S.A. in Guatemala.

Anacafé, the Guatemalan Coffee Association reports positive results for CR-10 in Phase I testing. CR-10 has proven to be the only effective organic, biodegradable fungicide to exterminate coffee rust with minimal impact on the eco system. (Source: Evelio Francisco Alvarado R., Anacafé General Manager) The Phase I testing will conclude with Anacafé “cupping test” of coffee treated with CR-10. The “cupping test” determines whether the taste of the coffee is affected by biodegradable, and eco-friendly fungicide CR-10. Bionovelus will report these results upon receipt.

Anacafé’s Phase II and final testing is two-fold and underway to evaluate the compatibility of CR-10 with residual chemical products originally used to treat coffee rust. Testing will determine whether CR-10 reduces the impact of the chemical residue in the coffee plants. Finally, testing on otherwise untreated organic coffee plantations will determine the maximum benefits of organic CR-10 to preserve the integrity of and “save” the organic coffee industry prior to any chemical treatments whatsoever.

Since coffee rust became an epidemic in Central America in 2012 (Source: Anacafé), there has not been any organic coffee rust killer to be approved by Anacafé (Guatemala) or ICafé (Costa-Rica), or any other coffee grower organization.

Additionally, the Guatemalan Chamber of Commerce has invited BioNovelus to take part in the AGRITRADE Expo & Conference, March 23 & 24, 2017. Agritrade, the largest international agricultural fair in Central America, scheduled bi-annually, “brings together international buyers and exporters of fresh and processed products of the region, involving suppliers and agricultural services in the supply chain.”

The coffee industry is the second largest commodity market in the world to the oil industry (Source: Business Insider). Since the late 19th century, the coffee industry has been plagued by Coffee Rust or "Roya" (Hemileia vastatrix) a devastating fungus that attacks the Arabica plant. Billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of industry jobs have been lost throughout Central America since 2012 to this Coffee Rust epidemic. (Source: ICafé). The entire coffee belt from Indonesia to Africa, to Central and South America to Vietnam and Asia is seeking a remedy to this Coffee Rust epidemic.

We are determined to help coffee growers keep the better tasting strain of the Arabica plant by fighting coffee rust through our “green” CR-10 instead of being forced to change to “hybrid” type plants. We feel very strongly that our “green”, biodegradable product is not only better for our environment but for people who enjoy the rich flavor that comes from Arabica coffee beans, whether organic or not.

BioNovelus’ primary target market is the $100Billion* plus, annual, worldwide, coffee industry. (*Source: Business Insider)
