HealthMine Research Shows 5 Things Consumers Want from Their Health Plans

DALLAS, March 23, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- HealthMine surveys with 9,250 insured consumers fielded from February 2015 to January 2017 revealed that health plan members want help from their plans in five key areas: 1) a reason to stay engaged in their health, 2) help closing gaps in care, 3) better digital connections, 4) an integrated platform for health and 5) relevant, real-time guidance. Meeting these needs is essential to promoting positive outcomes and lowering healthcare costs.

A Reason to Stay Engaged in Health
Few consumers stay engaged in their healthcare program throughout the year. Health plans can learn from successful engagement models in other industries; organizations that effectively engage their customers can experience a 240% boost in performance-related business outcomes compared to those with low engagement.

Help Closing Gaps in Care
Nearly half (44%) of consumers enrolled in health plans have a chronic condition. However, only 14% say their plan helps them better manage their disease. By closing gaps in care, health plans can realize significant cost savings.

Bettr Digital Connections

Forty-six percent (46%) of Americans who use digital health tools say the data collected by these tools is not incorporated into their healthcare. Digital transformation gives organizations key advantages including stronger connectivity, greater efficiency and automation, better decision making and more advanced innovation.

Integrated Platform for Health
Fifty-three percent (53%) of consumers say they can't access all their clinical health data from a computer. By integrating legacy systems and uniting electronic health records and other clinical and behavioral data into a single platform, health plans can facilitate member access to health information.

Relevant, Real-time Guidance
65% of consumers want reminders about critical health actions such as prescription refills and annual health exams. By notifying and giving guidance to members in real-time, health plans can deliver a better experience and have a greater impact on health outcomes.

About the Surveys
The HealthMine Health Plan Intelligence Surveys queried 9,250 insured consumers. The surveys were fielded by Survey Sampling International (SSI) between January 2015 and January 2017. Data were collected via an opt-in panel. The margin of error is 4%.
