Winstar Home Services Offers Homeowners Tips to Prepare for Summer

BALTIMORE, April 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Winstar Home Services, Baltimore's premier provider of residential HVAC, plumbing and electrical services, has tips for residents on how to prepare their HVAC system before the summer heat arrives.

"Every summer we get emergency calls from homeowners whose AC won't turn on or has stopped working," said Talbot Watkins III, president of Winstar Home Services. "By that time, it's already hot, their kids are complaining, maybe they have family or friends in town—they're miserable. That's the last position anyone wants to be in. Most of the time, these issues can be completely avoided with a few simple precautionary steps in the spring."

Watkins offers several quick and easy tips to help homeowners prepare their HVAC systems for the summer heat so that they don't get caught sweating it out:

  1. Replace your air filters: Air filters work overtime in the winter, so spring is a good time to replace your filters before the onset of summer. Dirty air filters make your HVAC system work harder than it needs to. This puts strain on the system, which can cause bigger issues and lead to higher utility bills.
  2. Check and clear your unit's drainage line: Most HVAC units hae a drainage line at the base of the cabinet. In order for the unit to run properly, the hole needs to be clear. To make sure the drainage line works properly, use a paper clip or a wire to ensure the hole is clear of any obstructions.
  3. Check your ductwork for issues: Your home's ductwork, or ventilation system, can often be the cause of poorly distributed air, which means you're spending more money on cool air that isn't making its way into your house. Check for leaky connections and return vents, damaged or fallen insulation, and ensure your vents (both incoming and outgoing) are not blocked or obstructed by rugs or furnishings.
  4. Test your unit: Turn on your AC and let in run briefly to see how it performs. If there are any problems, you'll have a head's up before the summer comes, not when it's already too late.

Watkins also advised homeowners to invest in HVAC system tune up before summer arrives.

"Baltimore winters, even the moderate ones like we had this past year, take a toll on your heating and air system," Watkins said. "Spring is a great time to have a professional come out and tune up your system to ensure that it's ready for the task of keeping you and your family cool all summer long."
