CAPP Chairman at mHealth Keynote: System-wide Integration of Technology Will Optimize Healthcare DeliveryDelivering the keynote address at the ninth annual mHealth + Telehealth World conference in Boston, Robert Pearl, M.D., former chairman of the Council of Accountable Physician Practices (CAPP), called for health care systems throughout the country to better integrate technologies such as electronic health records and telemedicine into health care delivery. "Hundreds of thousands of Americans die prematurely each year due to medical errors, failures in preventative care and avoidable complications from chronic illnesses," Dr. Pearl said. "Truly integrated technology can reduce the human and financial costs of these mistakes." CAPP, a coalition of visionary multi-specialty medical groups, supports the use of coordinated care, technology, prevention, physician leadership and evidence-based medicine to fix the gaps in the fragmented U.S. health care system. "Patients in the highest-performing integrated care settings are less likely to die of a heart attack or stroke, sepsis and from HIV or AIDS," noted Pearl. "Health care teams reach that pinnacle by providing the eadership required to properly balance the promise of technological innovations with the efficient delivery of healthcare - providing both high tech with high touch." The adoption of integrated technology can more tightly coordinate care, leading to better outcomes and earlier detection of illness. Examples are the use of EHRs with sophisticated data analytics to continually remind doctors to test patients when they need it, and telemedicine to link doctors and patients for greater accessibility, oversight and convenience. However, merely acquiring such technologies does not guarantee success. Dr. Pearl identified which technologies and in which combinations will deliver the most effective results. These adoptions must occur in the context of integrated health care organizations, with the appropriate value-based payment mechanisms in place and physician leadership that is dedicated to improving quality of care.
