Driving Growth in India Despite the Nation's Finite Water Resources - India's top CEOs Discuss a Holistic Approach to Water Management to Help Boost India's Manufacturing and Investment Climate

NEW DELHI, November 23, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --

We live in a world with limited freshwater resources, and nowhere is this more true than in India. Increasing demand will continue to put greater strain on our water resources. In fact, India is expected to become water scarce by 2025. To effectively grow and compete in the future, Indian companies will need to implement technologies to reduce, reuse and recycle water within their operations.

The United States Commercial Service (USCS) and Nalco Water Ltd, an Ecolab company, convened a high-powered discussion on how India can drive business growth  despite the nation's finite water resources.

Twenty-five leaders from India's top businesses, including Hindalco, Cargill, 3M, Solvay, Abbott, Apollo Tyres, Microsoft, Patanjali, Vedanta, Varun Beverages, NTPC and McKinsey, and representatives from the Department of Industrial Promotion and Policy (DIPP) participated in this exclusive event. Former U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen, chairman and CEO of The Cohen Group; Ambassador Arun Singh and Patrick Santillo, minister counselor for Commercial Affairs for the U.S. Embassy also participated in the event.

Attendees discussed innovative ideas to effectively harness the power of technology and  predictive inights to increase productivity while minimizing the use of water.

The business leaders also discussed the possibility working individually and collectively to set tangible goals to reduce water consumption in the coming years.

Speaking about this unique event, Minister Counselor Patrick Santillo commented, "We live in a world of increasingly limited resources. The declining availability of water, combined with increased demand, will create future challenges. Technology will play a very important role in helping companies operate more efficiently, sustainably and profitably in the future."

Secretary William Cohen, chairman and CEO of The Cohen Group and former US Defense Secretary notes, "The Driving Growth Conference highlighted the commitment of many of India's finest corporate leaders to protect India's most precious resource, water.  Nalco Water is dedicated to helping India's industry leaders be responsible water stewards, while reducing energy costs and increasing productivity and profitability."

Meetul Patel, general manager of Marketing and Operations for Microsoft in India, said, "The emergence of the Intelligent Edge and Intelligent Cloud is presenting opportunities for companies to conserve water and energy. Internet of Things (IoT) platforms are linking sensors across the value chain and locations to provide real-time data on utilization and performance, and artificial intelligence platforms can use this data to proactively predict risks and define actions to optimize the use of scarce resources. The power of information technology to help manage the use of India's finite resources is just beginning to be seen."

Mukund Vasudevan, managing director of Ecolab India, added, "It's time to have a hard talk about our most precious, but finite resource - water. We need to implement solutions to improve water efficiency and reduce demand. Government policy, pricing and subsidies also need to be addressed in an integrated manner to solve this imminent water challenge."
