The global automotive wiper motors market is directly proportional to the global automotive sales. The global automotive market is estimated to achieve sales of 109.43 million units by 2021.

According to Amey Vikram, a lead analyst at Technavio for automotive electronics research, "China is the dominant country with respect to automotive sales and is expected to remain the same during the forecast period. The country has registered significant growth in automotive sales owing to tax concessions, incentives and subsidies on the purchase of vehicles."

Growing auto component imports by European auto manufacturers

In 2016, 94.3 million units of vehicles were produced globally, with Europe having a market share of more than 23%. Europe showed the maximum growth and Germany was the largest vehicle manufacturer in Europe. The Czech Republic and Poland also showed high growth rates within the sector. This made the European automotive market attractive for suppliers from developing countries. The European Union imported automotive parts and components worth USD 250 billion in 2016.

Emergence of lighter and quieter wiper system

Traditional wipers use one or two motors that are attached to their linkage arms and help in connecting two blades. This arrangement leads to weight-related issues as the linkage arm is proportional to the area it needs to cover. Bosch has developed a new design of wiper system that has two motors attached to the end of each engine bay. The system replaces the mechanical linkage with an electronic control unit (ECU), which saves nearly 75% of the space. This makes the system lighter and less complicated and helps in achieving better fuel efficiency.

This also creates more space for other components such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, head-up displays (HUDs), airbags for occupants, and larger brake power boosters, and other new comfort features. The ECU unit controls the motor and offers maximum visibility, irrespective of friction, wind force, or wiping speed. The speed of the motor is usually reduced before reversal to confirm noiseless running.

Increasing demand for integrated and reversible wiper system

Wiper systems consist of various modules that need to be assembled to make the wiper work in the desired manner. They consist of wiper motors, wiper arms, and wiper blades. Automakers are researching innovative windshield washing technologies, which include developments in automotive wiper blade system for better and clear view of the road. Many global leading automotive manufacturers are also working on integrating wipe-and-wash and reversible wiper systems. For instance, Mercedes Benz developed 'Magic vision control' system that uses a conventional washing mechanism, with washer jets integrated on the wiper blade.

"Vehicle manufacturers buy all the parts of wiper systems and assemble them themselves. However, the new integrated wiper systems make this job easy for OEMs. Hence, the new ready-assembled products are gaining popularity among OEMs, thereby increasing the demand in the global automotive wiper motors market. Also, automakers are developing and offering advanced wiper blade systems that offer better cleaning performance than other conventional wiper blade systems," says Amey.
