Women Tech Council Opens Registration for SheTech, largest STEM activation program for high school girls

SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Women Tech Council today opened registration for SheTech 2018, a program that activates, engages and inspires high school girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through hands-on experience and mentoring.

The SheTech Explorer Day event on March 1 will draw more than 2,500 girls from across Utah to earn industry certifications, problem solve with mentors and explore STEM careers through activities like robotics, virtual reality, coding, 3D modeling and engineering. Over 100 tech companies will help students gain skills, confidence and inspiration to pursue STEM careers.

"When young women can experience technology first hand, they see their potential to create impact in the technology industry," said Cydni Tetro, president of WTC. "SheTech is about showcasing how technology is integrated into every industry young women may be considering pursuing, and inspiring them to get a foundation in STEM to accelerate their career opportunities and their impact on their communities."

Since launching in 2014, SheTech has expanded across the country and helped over 5,000 girls gain experience and confidence to pursue STEM.

"Attending SheTech inspired me to want to pursue a degree in STEM," said Makenzy Toro, a senior at Mountin View High school. "The opportunity to see technology, work with it, meet women who work in technology and see the types of jobs and opportunities that exist in technology helped me figure out what I want in my future in a way school or just hearing about careers never did."

Beyond Explorer Day, SheTech provides high school girls additional tools to help them prepare for and pursue STEM degrees by helping them gain internships, learn about college scholarships and find courses that match their interests in their school and district. Through this continual integration, SheTech goes beyond traditional programs that teach students skills by providing them ongoing resources, support and mentoring to continue their path into STEM and succeed.

SheTech Explorer Day 2018 will be held at the Mountain America Expo Center in partnership with Adobe, Ancestry, AT&T, Cox Automotive, Dell EMC and Vivint Smart Home. More than 100 tech companies will participate from Silicon Slopes.
