Study from CloudHealth Technologies and CTP Explores How Cloud Drives Competitive Advantage, Greater Top-Line Revenue

BOSTON, Feb. 21, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- CloudHealth Technologies, the leader in cloud service management, and Cloud Technology Partners (CTP), a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company and premier cloud services and software provider, today announced the results of their annual Secrets of the Cloud Leaders Study. The study focuses on behaviors of two camps -- cloud "leaders" and "laggards" -- connecting certain tactics and approaches to better business outcomes.

Last year, the first installment of Secrets of the Cloud Leaders broke new ground by seeking to pinpoint the formula that makes for an optimal cloud strategy. This year, the study went even deeper in its exploration of how to ensure a successful cloud deployment and what impact it can have on the business -- not just in terms of cost reduction, but overall business value. The majority of cloud leaders see cloud fueling revenue growth (97 percent) and creating competitive advantage (98 percent). On average, they estimate that cloud is causing a 51 percent year-over-year change in top-line revenue. 95 percent of leaders report that they are able to quickly identify and mitigate cloud risk.

Here are some of the practices that contribute to the leaders' success:

  • Cloud leaders have better visibility and exert tighter control: Cloud leaders reported having transparent, fully visible cloud deployments (94 percent) and a "moderate" or "complete" understanding of workloads running in the cloud (97 percent). 94 percent report having clearly defined roles and responsibilities for managing cloud infrastructure, while 95 percent conduct cloud availability planning. They know their people, processes, and price.
  • Cloud laggards lack in automation and struggle with oversight:  72 percent of leaders state their cloud usage is moderately/completely automated, compared to only 31 percent of laggards. Only 35 percent of laggards have automated cloud infrastructure deployment and maintenance, and less than half (46 percent) have reference architectures—leaving them without a clear set of rules to help ensure cloud deployments comply with enterprise standards. Conversely, 90 percent of leaders do moderate/continuous forecasting or what-if analysis for cloud deployments.

These responses clarify the practices that define cloud leaders, but the data alone does not provide a true success roadmap. As such, the second part of the study relied on real-world commentary to supplement the survey findigs and shed light on the strategies that separate top-tier enterprises from the bottom tier.

"Success in the cloud is not a foregone conclusion, which is why this survey was designed to uncover the intangibles that accelerate business transformation," said Melodye Mueller, VP of Marketing and Strategic Alliances, CloudHealth Technologies. "We are constantly working with customers to optimize their cloud programs and provide meaningful best practices, and so we went into this with a strong grasp of what takeaways would be most impactful. Then we gleaned additional insight from focus groups -- which revealed that, while cloud leaders are at the head of the pack, even they don't always have it all figured out. That's an important reminder of just how timely this conversation is."

"Even businesses that are experiencing early success may have storm clouds on the horizon," said Jonathan Bumba, CMO, CTP. "CTP is on the frontlines of this challenge, and we know how crucial it is to solicit help and really understand cloud best practices -- regardless of where you are in your cloud maturity journey. So we're providing a roadmap that outlines what you can do better, the metrics that matter most, and how you can evaluate the true business value of your investments, beyond just TCO."

About the Secrets of the Cloud Leaders Study
Conducted by CloudHealth Technologies and Cloud Technology Partners, the annual Secrets of the Cloud Leaders Study surveyed 550 senior managers involved in cloud operations from global enterprises of 500 employees or more. Study questions centered around respondents' organizations, cloud operations and how they fared with a range of operational metrics. Additionally, focus groups were conducted to further uncover specific attitudes and first-hand experiences from enterprise organizations to underline concrete evidence of how to move through different stages of the cloud lifecycle. In the context of this research, "cloud leader" is defined as an enterprise that reaps optimal results from their cloud deployment and has overcome common industry pain points to excel in their cloud initiatives.
