George Washington University Online High School to Hold In-Person Graduation Ceremony


The George Washington University Online High School (GWUOHS), a full-time online private school for students worldwide, will celebrate the Class of 2018 with an in-person graduation ceremony on Saturday, June 23, at 1 p.m. in the Marvin Center Grand Ballroom on the George Washington University's Foggy Bottom campus.

Twenty-eight students representing 16 states will graduate from GWUOHS, an online college preparatory academy for students in grades 8-12. Students receive a rigorous, personalized education that meets their own needs and goals combined with the innovative Journey's Symposium, which promotes self-awareness, leadership, service and personal success.

K12 President of Academics, Policy and Schools and national education reform advocate Kevin P. Chavous will deliver the keynote address.

"As George Washington University Online High School seniors get ready to take on the next chapter in their lives, the class of 2018 is set up for success," Chavous said. "The academic success of these K12-powered students demonstrates the very best in what a personalized education has to offer."

Graduating senior Luca Lim of Annandale, Virginia, has been chosen as the student speaker. Lim, who has attended GWUOHS for four years, has been training in short track speed-skating in South Korea and recently competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials. He intends to enroll in the London School of Economics after another year of training.

Other GWUOHS seniors who will graduate on Saturday include:

  • Kenlee Danner of Canton, Ohio, will attend Parsons (News - Alert) School of Design on multiple merit scholarships. She created a skincareline for her senior project which is now being sold on Amazon.
  • Shelbi Gill of Acton, Massachusetts, earned the Gold Distinction award from United Skates Figure Skating, as well as the Girl Scouting Gold Award. She currently serves as a U.S. Figure Skating judge. Gill plans to attend University of Massachusetts, where she will double-major in psychology and biology.
  • Christian Eckes of Cornelius, North Carolina, is a professional race car driver who is part of the Kyle Busch Motorsports and Venturini Motorsports teams. He will attend Central Piedmont College this fall with guaranteed transfer to the University of North Carolina.
  • Siobhan Lim of Annandale, Virginia, will attend Instituto Marangoni in Milan, Italy, one of the top-ranked fashion-design schools in the world.
  • Sophia Nguyen of San Francisco attend the United Nations Winter Youth Assembly in 2017 to discuss global issues with students from across the world. She plans to attend St. Mary's College of California, where she will major in environmental science with a minor in political science this fall.
  • Sara Scheibert of Coral Springs, Florida, is a professional figure skater. She learned how to fly a plane for her senior project and intends to study to be a doctor. Scheibert will attend Stony Brook University this fall.
  • Makenzie Stine of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, has been accepted to 11 universities and plans to attend Baylor University to study bio-chemistry on a pre-med track.



Collectively, the Class of 2018 reports that it has been offered more than $1.6 million in college scholarships. The graduates report that they have been accepted to a number of prestigious colleges and university across the country, including Baylor University, University of Colorado, Creighton University, George Washington University, Hofstra University, Johns Hopkins University, Loyola University-Chicago, Marquette University, New York University, Oregon State University and Syracuse University, among many others.

Additionally, a number of students have been accepted to universities overseas, including Oxford Brookes University, Regent's University London, University of Greenwich, University of Saint Andrews, University of Surrey, Maynooth University and American University of Paris.
