Utah Virtual Academy to Kick Off 2018-19 School Year on August 21

Students at Utah Virtual Academy (UTVA), an accredited online public charter school, will begin their 2018-19 school year on August 21, simply by turning on their computers. UTVA begins its 11th school year offering public school at home to students statewide in kindergarten through 12th grade.

UTVA provides families and students an alternative to traditional brick-and-mortar education. Students enroll in online school for a variety of reasons, including advanced learning, a bullying-free environment and the ability to balance their education with extracurricular pursuits or medical needs. Combining innovative technology with a rigorous and engaging curriculum led by state-certified teachers, UTVA offers each student a personalized learning experience.

"At UTVA, our unique approach to learning helps put students on a path to success with the tools they need to reach their full potential," said Meghan Merideth, head of school at Utah Virtual Academy. "Teachers and families work together to create a personalized education tailored to each student's individual needs."

Students in all grade levels take a full course load across the core subjects of English/language arts, math, science and history, as well as art and music.

UTVA's high school program has a strong focus on college and career readiness, better preparing students for their next steps, whether that's college, a career, or both. UTVA's college concurrent enrollment (CE) program offers one of the state's most robust catalog of college course offerings. Partnering with Salt Lake Community College, Snow College, and Dixie State University, eligible students are able to earn college credits toward an associate degree while working toward high school graduation.

The Destinations Career Program gives high school students exposure to relevant technical and specialty trade skills, allowing them to explore potential future occupations in high-demand career fields. UTVA offers career technical education (CTE) courses in two pathways: information technology and health sciences.

UTVA students can also take advantage of K12's new partnership with STEM Premier, a collaborative relationship-building platform connecting students with career pathways, jobs, colleges, trade schools and scholarship opportunities. Students create online portfolios highlighting career interests, academic achievements, extracurricular activities and certifications. The platform allows STEM Premier member organizations to recruit for skilled talent.

"Students enrolled in UTVA's Destinations pathways are being prepared for in-demand, lucrative career opportunities in the 21st century workforce," said Casey Welch, STEM Premier President and CEO. "We look forward to providing an opportunity for these students to showcase their skills, talents and abilities on the STEM Premier platform."

Students have the choice to enroll at UTVA full-time or remain in their local high school or homeschool setting and enroll through the Statewide Online Education Program (SOEP) in up to six full-year online courses from the K12 catalog.

UTVA's dedicated teachers facilitate lessons during live, interactive online classes and interact with students and families via phone, email, web-based classrooms and online discussions, building close partnerships with parents and students to support academic success. The online platform enables students to enjoy a safe learning environment while connecting with classmates and teachers from across the state.

Throughout the school year, UTVA builds a sense of community through in-person field trips, monthly social outings and service learning opportunities. UTVA celebrates the end of the school year with an in-person prom and honors graduating seniors with an in-person commencement ceremony in the spring. Virtual clubs and student organizations allow students to further explore their interests together in the online setting.

UTVA is currently accepting enrollments for the fall. Interested families are encouraged to attend online and in-person information sessions hosted by the school. To learn more, visit utva.k12.com or download the K12 enrollment app for iOS and Android (News - Alert) devices.
