Lexia Learning's Dr. Suzanne Carreker Receives Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Dyslexia Association

BOSTON, Nov. 15, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Suzanne Carreker, Ph.D., CALT-QI, the principal educational content lead at Lexia Learning, a Rosetta Stone® (NYSE: RST) company, has been named the 2018 recipient of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) Margaret Byrd Rawson Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Margaret Byrd Rawson Award recognizes the work of an individual to advance the mission of IDA. The Award is given each year to an IDA member whose work on behalf of IDA embodies Margaret Rawson’s compassion, leadership, commitment to excellence, fervent advocacy for people with dyslexia, and whose work is nationally recognized as furthering the mission of IDA.

Dr. Carreker joined Lexia Learning in 2015, spearheading the curriculum design of a ground-breaking reading program for adolescent non-proficient readers, Lexia PowerUp Literacy™ (PowerUp). The program simultaneously accelerates the development of both fundamental literacy skills and higher-order thinking skills for students in grades 6 and above through adaptive learning paths. By engaging students with a range of relevant, high-interest authentic texts; instructional videos; and game-based motivational elements, PowerUp is intended to help students take ownership of their learning, acknowledging their growing autonomy and building their confidence.

Since 1987, Dr. Carreker has also served as senior vice president of Innovative Solutions at Neuhaus Education Center, a nonprofit organization offering professional development in evidence-based reading methods to more than 60,000 teachers. She recently completed 10 years of service on the board of IDA, where she led the development of the organization’s teacher certification exam. In 2009, Carreker was the recipient of the HBIDA Nancy LaFevers Community Service Award for her contributions to students with dyslexia and other related learning differences in the Houston community.

Dr. Carreker received both her Master of Science degree and doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Texas A&M University and her Bachelor’s of Art from Hood College. She co-edited the fourth edition of Multisensory Teaching of Basic Language Skills and, in addition, contributed two chapters. She is currently contributing a chapter in Fundamentals of Literacy Instruction and Assessment.

Recently, Dr. Carreker authored a white paper titled “Equitable Literacy Education: The Transformative Impact of Building Teacher Capacity and Confidence.” The white paper discusses the difference between equity and equality, why equity is important for literacy and the impact of teacher capacity and teacher confidence in literacy education.
