Dr. M. Lee Pearce Foundation Announces Grant Recipients

The Dr. M. Lee Pearce Foundation, Inc. announced cash grants of more than $500,000, which included cash grants in support of South Florida classical music programs totaling $260,000.

"We are enthusiastic about supporting the performance and understanding of classical music in South Florida where Dr. Pearce lived for so many years and look forward to continued cooperation with these outstanding programs," said Charles Douglas, Chairman and President of The Dr. M. Lee Pearce Foundation, Inc.

The Dr. M. Lee Pearce Foundation grants went to the Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency program ($100,000); a fellowship at the New World Symphony ($50,000); and five scholarships at the University of Miami Frost School of Music Chopin Academy ($10,000).

An additional $100,000 was awarded earlier to the Mariinsky Foundation of America to fund a concert held at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts at the end of October. Maesro Valery Gergiev, a Pearce Foundation board member, conducted the St. Petersburg, Russia-based Mariinsky Orchestra with selections from Wagner, Haydn, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, and Strauss. Maestro Gergiev concluded the concert with recollections of his good friend, Lee Pearce, and then led the orchestra in an encore performance of Shostakovich's Romance from the film, "The Gladfly."

With his passing in October 2017, Miami Beach resident Dr. Pearce left in place a foundation dedicated to the support of classical music and to improving medical care with an emphasis on aging.

This year, coupled with an earlier donation, the foundation is supporting multi-disciplinary research conducted by Harvard faculty who are studying some of the most pressing issues related to aging and age-related illness ranging from basic biology to policy. The funding supports experts throughout Harvard's schools, institutes and affiliated hospitals.

Additional foundation grants were awarded to the Metropolitan Opera's Saturday Matinee Radio Broadcast, the Skyline Piano Artist Series at Northwestern's Bienen School of Music, and smaller grants to nine other organizations.
