St. Paul Senior Workers Association Contributes $2,000 to the Dakota County Technical College to Combat Shortage of Healthcare Workers

In an effort to help combat the growing shortage of healthcare workers in the Twin Cities, the St. Paul Senior (News - Alert) Workers Association (SPSWA) has contributed $2,000 to the Dakota County Technical College's Medical Assistant, Nursing Assistant and Practical Nursing programs. The donation took place today during the SPSWA's annual holiday gathering.

"As professionals in the senior industry, we see first-hand the impact of the healthcare worker shortage," said Annalisha Perez, incoming president of the SPSWA. "We wanted to give back to the industry we love and help its future in a real tangible way. Dakota County Technical College's programs are very worthy recipients."

Amy Eppen, Foundation Development Director for Dakota County Technical College, accepted the donation and said, "We are pleased and honored to receive support from the St. Paul Senior Workers Association. In the past, this organization provided scholarship funding for our Nuring Assistant students and now we look forward to awarding additional scholarships to high-achieving Medical Assistant, Nursing Assistant, and Practical Nursing students with an interest in serving geriatric patients."

Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) was founded in 1970, is in Rosemount and is one of the few technical colleges in Minnesota. Michael Berndt serves as the Interim President and the college's motto is "Real Education. Real Results." Typically enrolling 2,300 students per term, many DCTC students are non-traditional students with an average age of 29 years old. DCTC offers a wide array of academic programs including Automotive Technology, Accounting, Brewing & Beer Steward Technology, Medical Assistant, Practical Nursing, Software Development, and Welding to name a few. In August 2019, DCTC's Medical Assistant program was nationally recognized by TheBestSchools.org as a top 20 program offering accredited online medical assistant certification. The college will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2020.

The purpose of the SPSWA is to provide individuals working in the field of aging an opportunity to participate in a group dedicated to providing information regarding programs and concerns of seniors; to exchange ideas and resources; to examine issues affecting seniors; to provide information on current legislative issues in a non-biased manner and to advocate for the wellbeing of seniors.
