39% of Global businesses are not prepared for a ransomware attack

Ontrack, the world's leading data recovery service provider, revealed that 39% of organizations surveyed said they have no ransomware emergency plan in place or are unsure if one exists. Ontrack surveyed 484 organizations from the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom and asked how they would handle a potential ransomware attack. Twenty-one percent of the survey respondents said they had already experienced a ransomware attack, and more than 26% said they could not access a working back-up after the attack. Even when organizations could access a working back-up, 22% of them could only restore a partial amount of data or none at all.

Ransomware cases have increased globally during the COVID-19 pandemic. In most countries, employees have been working under a completely different set of parameters, including new security protocols, increased cybercriminal activity, exploitation of weak infrastructures, and IT departments required to react faster to potential risks from malware infiltrating their systems.

"The threat of ransomware attacks has never been greater," said Jeff Pederson, Ontrack's U.S. director of operations. "With more company employees working at-home, more distractions have led to lax safety precautionswhen handling email. And, with reduced IT staff, or 'shadow IT' personnel that have not been properly vetted-the risk of ransomware affecting corporate servers when remote users connect has greatly increased. We have seen cases that have come into our labs from all organizations, including healthcare, financial, educational, and government. It is imperative, now as ever, to ensure that organizations have processes and procedures in place to mitigate the impact of cyberattacks and protect sensitive data," added Pederson.

Ontrack provides free phone consultations to organizations that have been impacted by ransomware. To learn more about Ontrack's ransomware capabilities, visit https://www.ontrack.com/en-us/data-recovery/ransomware.
