Priority Health Allowing Deductible Transfers for Individuals Switching Insurers During Special Enrollment Period

In support of the Biden administration's efforts to provide affordable health coverage to more Americans during the special enrollment period, Priority Health is allowing individuals to carry over their current deductible amount to a new plan. This applies to both new and current members who enroll in a Priority Health plan during the special enrollment period, which runs through August 15, 2021. While other insurers have agreed to carry over deductible spending between plan types, Priority Health is the only health plan in Michigan allowing consumers to bring their deductible with them if they switch from another insurer.

"Between the extension of the special enrollment period and the passing of the American Rescue Plan that made Marketplace coverage significantly more affordable, there is no better time for Michiganders to get covered," said Carrie Kincaid, Vice President of Individual Markets at Priority Health. "We don't want there to be any barriers during this special enrollment period, and that is why we are allowing deductible transfers. This means any money someone has already paid toward their current plan deductible can be applied toward their new MyPriority plan deductible."

Following the announcement of the special enrollment period, Priority Health pivoted operations to accommodate for new or crrent members who were interested in purchasing a MyPriority plan on the Marketplace. Part of this preparation included making the decision to allow for deductible transfers. The insurer also followed guidance from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and Michigan's Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) when implementing the health coverage changes under the American Rescue Plan.

Priority Health is the only plan in Michigan to decrease monthly premiums in the ACA individual market for the last three years. The insurer also recently launched innovative virtual-first plan options in the individual market, making them among the first in the country to offer this type of product.
