Copper Ridge Surgery Center Becomes First ASC in Region to Introduce MOSES Laser

Copper Ridge Surgery Center, Michigan's state-of-the-art freestanding ambulatory surgery center (ASC (News - Alert)), has become the first ASC facility in the northern part of the state to offer same-day treatment of kidney stones and benign enlarged prostate using the MOSES™ Pulse 120H by Lumenis, an advancement in minimally invasive laser technology.

The center's adoption of the gold-standard equipment was essential to its recent creation of a urology center designed to serve as a hub for care within this specialty in Northern Michigan. In recruiting top regional talent for the new center, Copper Ridge found that many urologists requested the MOSES technology, citing its versatility, speed, accuracy, and efficiency in the performance of lithotripsy for kidney stones and MOSES Vaporization with Xpeeda for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

"After speaking with our growing staff of urologic specialists and learning which tools they consider priorities for supporting best surgical practice, our leadership team quickly recognized the value the MOSES laser surgical system would bring to our facility," said Tina Piotrowski, Copper Ridge CEO and president of the Michigan Ambulatory Surgery Association. "In our designated outpatient setting, the application of this type of cutting-edge technology, coupled with our efficient protocols for everything from scheduling to time spent in surgery, crates a seamless and easy procedural experience for both surgeon and patient."

A multi-specialty ASC that conducts over 22,000 surgical cases a year, Copper Ridge is excited to be employing the MOSES technology to facilitate same-day discharge for patients who undergo lithotripsies or Moses BPH Vaporization procedures, although the facility also offers four overnight rooms featuring up to 24-hour care for individuals who require additional observation or treatment.

"In addition to the fact that this technology improves our efficiency when it comes to MOSES BPH Vaporization, we're confident in our ability to discharge most of our patients the same day they've undergone the procedure,"1 said Diane Young, MD, a urologist at Copper Ridge. "This provides a great deal of peace of mind to our patients, in addition to helping to control their out-of-pocket costs."

Copper Ridge urologist Andrew Luea, DO, said that the MOSES laser technology offers notable advantages to those undergoing lithotripsy, as well.

"Because this stone-dusting technology allows a 33% reduction2,3 in the time it takes surgeons to fragment kidney stones, it has been shown to shorten the length of the whole procedure by at least 20%,"4,5 he said. "And, by raising the likelihood that stones will be entirely pulverized, MOSES helps prevent the complications that can arise when we need to use fragment-extraction tools."2

Compared with standard lasers, this modern technology has been shown to garner a 50% reduction in retropulsion,4,5,6 or the unintentional repelling of stones while breaking them up. An efficient treatment for kidney stones of any size or type,2,3 the MOSES system has demonstrated a 95% single-treatment success rate.6
