Microsoft Hints at Office for iPad

By David Delony, Contributing Writer

While sales of Apple’s iOS devices including the iPad and the iPhone continue to grow, Microsoft (News - Alert) Office is still the gold standard of business computing and Office 365 is quickly becoming an important tool in business collaboration. While the technology giant has been promising some kind of support for the platform, it has been vague about what that actually means.

Yet, the press has speculated as of late that Microsoft is planning to introduce Office for the iPad, and the company all but made it official in December.

“There are some of the Office services that are available on the iPad. We have OneNote available on the iPad,” Bill Koefoed, chief financial officer of Microsoft’s Skype (News - Alert) division, said at the NASDAQ OMX Investor Program on Dec. 4.

He added, “I know we have Lync available on the iPad. And so as you look, we obviously think that Office is a differentiator on the Surface and you should obviously watch the Office momentum that we have with the Office 2013 release, and they'll have more to say on the products and how it lights up the different devices.”

In addition, writers for The Daily, the soon-to-be-defunct iPad newspaper owned by Rupert Murdoch, commented that Microsoft has already demonstrated a version of Office running on the iPad. When the provider has yet to officially announce Office for the iPad, it’s believed that the product will require a subscription to Office 365.

Office 365 is a cloud-based suite of software that includes Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SharePoint and Office Web apps, as well as Microsoft Office Professional Plus in volume licensing.

The solution is meant to help organizations improve collaboration and communication. And recently, TMCnet reported that the Singapore-based Helsing Corporation turned to Office 365 to upgrade its outdated and unreliable e-mail system, which seems to be an increasingly popular trend amongst companies in every industry.
