GOP gains greater hold on local, state offices

Straight party ticket voting.
It's a trend local Republican's began during the 2008 general election when Barry Willingham defeated longtime official Kay D. Williams-Smith for the seat of Revenue Commissioner. It continued in 2010 as Republicans grabbed the offices of Cullman County Sheriff, Cullman County Coroner, and a state house seat.
And there was no bucking it during Tuesday night's general election, as Tammy Brown gained 64 percent of the votes to defeated Leah Patterson Lust for the office of Cullman County Probate Judge.
"We are pleased that most of our state and local elected offices are now held by Republicans, that after over 140 years, Cullman County has finally become a red county in a red state, and our office holders now truly reflect the core conservative values and principals that our local citizens stand for," Cullman County Republican Party Chairman Ken Brown said in a prepared statement. "I am confident that our Republican Party now has in place a quality team of office holders form Senator to school board members, who will work hard to bring better government to our state and county."
Despite President Barack Obama being elected for another term in office, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney not only was declared a winner in Cullman County, but the state of Alabama as well.
"As Chairman of the Cullman County Republican Party, I'm very gratified to see a large majority of our conservative county voters reject both Obama personally, and the far left Democrat Party he represents," Brown said. "It is this steady Democratic Party movement to the liberal left that has alienated county Democrats and persuaded many to reconsider their party affiliation."
