Bennett wins sixth term as Precinct 1 constable
PALESTINE, Nov 07, 2012 (Palestine Herald-Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Anderson County Precinct 1 Constable Larry Bennett won his sixth term in office against Republican challenger Ronnie Foster by 424 votes Tuesday during the general election.
Bennett garnered 2,322 votes compared to Foster's 1,898 votes.
"I want to thank everybody in Precinct 1 for the vote of confidence -- again -- and especially to the three people who wrote letters in the newspaper and to everybody who let me put a sign in their yard," Bennett said after the final box totals came in at the Anderson County Courthouse Annex. "I will continue to serve with the respect and honesty as I have done for the last 20 years."
In the early voting results, Bennett and Foster were almost equal with Bennett gaining 1,286 votes over Foster's 1,280.
"I appreciate everybody's vote and support. For my first time to run for office, it definitely was a learning experience. I had a lot of fun and met a lot of people," Foster said after the election. "I will continue to serve people like I have for years at the Sheriff's Office -- it won't change my service to the community."
Foster serves as a sergeant investigator with the Anderson County Sheriff's Office, where he has been employed since 1996. He also served six years with the Palestine Police Department, after coming home from serving in the military.
When asked if he will consider running for office again, Foster said he is unsure.
"It's something to think about and pray about," Foster said.
In the spring primaries, Foster gained almost 60 percent of the vote to defeat Jeff Taylor for the Republican nomination for Anderson County precinct 1 constable.
In 2008, Bennett, the Democratic incumbent, defeated Republican challenger Jeff Taylor, 2,657 votes to 1,740.
